Under the new law (courtesy of Assemblyman Gil Cedillo), police in California will not be able to freely impound cars from sober-but-unlicensed drivers at DUI checkpoints anymore. This bill is an effort to curb the alleged misuse of DUI checkpoints to unfairly target unlicensed illegal immigrants.
The law, written by Assmblyman Gil Cedillo and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, stipulates that the car must either be released to a qualified driver representing the reigstered owner at the scene or, later, at the impound yard.
